“Beachcomber” necklace – 1800s heart

Beautifully simple seaglass pendant made of a piece of unusual blue and white slag glass, found at Seaham, one of the UK’s most popular locations for beachcombers looking for glass. Sunderland, just up the coast from Seaham, was a prosperous centre for glass production and little bits of the history of these old factories wash onto the shore every day. This particular kind of glass was commonly produced by the region’s manufacturers in the 1880s and 1890s so it really could be that old.

The chunky piece of deep blue and white glass is about 32 x 34mm in size (around 1¼ x 1¼”). It has been carefully drilled into the top and a sterling silver top pin and bail attached, enabling it to be turned into a unique pendant. It is hanging on an 18” (46cm) 925 sterling silver fine belcher chain.

You may notice the seaglass has been gently polished with a little coconut oil which protects it and enhances its appearance. As and when this soaks in and/or rubs off you can either retain the matt finish or rub in a little more oil of some kind.

The necklace comes boxed as shown and a complementary polishing cloth is also included.
