I was fortunate enough to buy a mixed-use property which is my home, as well as serving as a creative outlet for over 40 makers, in Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight. With its local mantra, “Keep Ventnor Weird,” I love both living and working in this fabulous location, searching for seaglass on an almost daily basis. Born in Stornoway, I’m an island girl at heart. The shop is open at 46 High Street, Ventnor, PO38 1LT. On the site of the former bar and eaterie “Perks”, it is still a work in progress but do please come and say hi if you’re on the island.

Artemis and The Mermaid was set up in Whitby in May 2016 by myself and a friend known as The Whitby Mermaid. We were both passionate about creating and the shop started off as a way for the two of us to sell our makes… from jewellery to shell covered frames, little packets of seaglass to beads. We expanded into selling handmade goods from other, mostly local, creatives until we had work from around 25 people crammed into our tiny shop. It became a veritable cornucopia of jewellery, crafting items and charms, tarot and oracle cards, incense and essential oils, lots of mermaid and unicorn related gifts, crocheted items and handmade sculpts.

Sadly, due to circumstances outwith our control, this shop closed its doors in May 2021, after five years of very happy trading. The current Artemis and The Mermaid opened its doors on 6 April 2023. We have created an artisan collective with products from over 40 artists and makers selling jewellery, crochet, art, greetings cards, one-off upcycled items, photography, eco-friendly 3D prints, gemstones and fossils, charms, beads and – new for 2025 – a fantastic selection of yarn.
